A Lunch for Everyone

preschoolelementary

Type: Visual Object Lesson
Time: 5 minutes
Group Size: Any
Materials:

  • A small lunchbox or brown paper bag.
  • Inside the bag: 5 crackers (or small rolls) and 2 gummy fish (or real fish crackers).

Purpose

To visually demonstrate how incredibly small the boy’s lunch was compared to the size of the crowd, helping children understand the magnitude of Jesus’ miracle.

Setup

Keep the lunchbox closed and out of sight until the lesson begins.

Exact Instructions

  1. Tell the children: “I have a huge problem today. I was supposed to bring lunch for everyone in our entire church. All the adults, all the teenagers, and all the kids. But I was in a rush, and I only grabbed one lunchbox.”
  2. Pull out the lunchbox and open it.
  3. Slowly pull out the 5 crackers and the 2 fish crackers. Lay them on a table.
  4. Ask: “Who is hungry? If I break this cracker into tiny, tiny pieces, do you think I can feed everyone in this room? What about everyone in the whole building?”
  5. Have the children try to do the math. (It’s impossible).

Discussion

Ask: “How would you feel if you were standing in a crowd of 5,000 hungry people, and someone handed you this tiny lunch and said, ‘Okay, feed everyone’?” (Overwhelmed, silly, impossible). “What would you have to do to make this food feed that many people?” (Do magic, or a miracle).

Connection Back to the Bible Story

Explain: “When Jesus told the disciples to feed the massive crowd, Philip actually did the math. He said that even if they worked for eight months, they wouldn’t have enough money to buy everyone one single bite! But Jesus didn’t need money. He just needed someone willing to give what they had. A young boy offered his tiny lunch of five loaves and two fish. In our hands, it’s just a snack. But in Jesus’ hands, it was enough for a miracle.”
