Queen Esther's Crown

preschoolelementary Craft ⏱ 15 minutes

Materials Needed

  • Yellow or gold construction paper (cut into long strips)
  • Stickers, sequins, or stick-on gems
  • Markers or crayons
  • Stapler or tape (for the teacher to fit the crowns)

Purpose

To give children a tangible reminder of Esther’s royal position, and how God placed her in the palace “for such a time as this.”

Setup

Finished Esther Crown

  1. Cut the yellow or gold construction paper into long strips (about 3 inches wide and the length of the paper). You will need two strips stapled together to fit around a child’s head.
  2. Cut a zig-zag pattern into the top of the strips to look like a crown.

Instructions

  1. Decorate: Give each child a flat crown strip. Have them decorate it to look as royal as possible using markers, stickers, or stick-on gems.
  2. The Verse: Have older children write (or help younger children write) “For Such a Time as This” on the front of their crown.
  3. Assemble: When they are finished decorating, the teacher should wrap the crown around the child’s head to measure it, and then staple or tape the ends together so they can wear it!
  4. Wear it: Have the children put on their crowns and sit like brave kings and queens.

Discussion While Crafting

  • “Did Esther become the queen by accident, or did God plan it?” (God planned it perfectly).
  • “Was it scary for Esther to talk to the King?” (Yes, it was against the law!).
  • “When you wear this crown, remember that God has placed you exactly where you are—in your school, in your family, and in your neighborhood—for a reason. You can be brave like Esther!”
