Type: Visual Object Lesson
Time: 5–7 minutes
Group Size: Any
Materials:
- A small glass jar or cup (clear is best)
- A large pitcher of water (or a box of cereal/crackers)
- A small bowl
Purpose
To visually demonstrate the miracle of the flour and oil never running out, showing that when we trust God with what little we have, He provides exactly what we need.
Setup
Place the empty jar and the small bowl on a table where everyone can see. Keep the large pitcher hidden behind the table or out of sight.
Exact Instructions
- Hold up the small empty jar. Say: “Imagine you are incredibly thirsty, and this is your cup. How much water is in it?” (None).
- Point to the small bowl. Say: “Now imagine this bowl has exactly one bite of food left in it. That’s all you have for the rest of your life. Would you want to share it with a stranger?”
- Have the children answer. Most will honestly say “No.”
- Bring out the hidden pitcher of water (or box of cereal).
- Say: “The widow in our story only had one handful of flour left. But God made her a promise. He said, ‘If you trust me, your jar will never run dry.’”
- Start pouring water from the large pitcher into the small cup until it overflows into the bowl. Keep pouring steadily.
- Say: “Every time she scooped out flour to make bread, God miraculously put more in. She scooped, God filled. She poured, God filled. It never ran out!”
Discussion
Ask: “Did the widow have a giant warehouse full of food?” (No). “She only had enough for one day at a time. Why do you think God gave her exactly what she needed for just one day, instead of giving her a million pounds of flour all at once?” (So she would have to trust Him every single day).
Connection Back to the Bible Story
Explain: “God didn’t ask the widow to trust her pantry; He asked her to trust HIM. When we give God the little bit that we have, His supply never runs dry. He provides exactly what we need, exactly when we need it.”
