Wind and Waves (Parachute Game)

preschoolelementary

Type: Interactive Object Lesson
Time: 10 minutes
Group Size: 4–15 (If larger, split into smaller groups)
Materials:

  • A large bedsheet, blanket, or play parachute
  • A paper boat (or small soft toy)

Purpose

To visually demonstrate how circumstances can feel out of control, but Jesus’ word brings immediate peace.

Setup

Have the children stand in a circle holding the edges of the sheet tightly. Place the paper boat in the center of the sheet.

Exact Instructions

  1. Tell the children they represent the Sea of Galilee, and the paper boat is the disciples’ ship.
  2. Say: “Right now, the sea is calm. Make gentle waves.” (Children softly ripple the sheet).
  3. Say: “But then, the wind started blowing.” (Children ripple it faster).
  4. Say: “The storm got worse! The waves were crashing into the boat!” (Children shake the sheet vigorously, trying to bounce the boat high into the air without throwing it off the sheet).
  5. Let them create a chaotic, noisy storm for 15–20 seconds.
  6. Step forward, raise your hand, and boldly declare: “Quiet! Be still!”
  7. At that exact command, the children must instantly pull the sheet tight and hold it perfectly still, freezing in silence.
  8. Repeat this 2 or 3 times, letting them feel the contrast between the chaos of the storm and the immediate peace of the command.

Discussion

Ask the children: “When you were making the storm, the boat was bouncing completely out of control. What happened the second the command was given?” (It stopped completely.)

Explain: “Our problems often feel like that bouncing boat—out of control and scary. But Jesus has absolute authority over everything in the universe. When He speaks, creation obeys.”

Connection Back to the Bible Story

Remind the children that the disciples tried everything to save the boat, but nothing worked. It wasn’t until the Creator spoke that the storm stopped. Jesus’ peace is greater than the world’s chaos.
