The feeding of the five thousand is the only miracle (other than the resurrection) recorded in all four Gospels. A massive crowd had followed Jesus far into the wilderness to hear Him teach. When it got late and the people were hungry, Jesus tested His disciples by telling them to feed the crowd. Instead of panicking, Andrew brought Jesus a young boy who was willing to share his lunch of five small barley loaves and two fish. This lesson teaches children that Jesus is the Bread of Life, and that He can take our small, ordinary gifts and use them to accomplish extraordinary things.
What You'll Teach
- ✓ Jesus cared about the physical needs of the people, not just their spiritual needs.
- ✓ The disciples looked at the problem with human logic and thought it was impossible.
- ✓ A young boy was willing to generously share the little bit he had.
- ✓ Jesus gave thanks for the food and miraculously multiplied it.
- ✓ Jesus provides more than enough (there were 12 baskets left over!).
